NUCCRA's Cleanlink Conference was a huge success! This is the time to get involved and join the assocation

April 2011

Article courtesy of Inclean Magazine.

While the National Upholstery, Carpet Cleaners & Restorers Association's (NUCCRA) Cleanlink 2011 conference was themed 'Rev up your Business Engine', perhaps the real message was the Association's intent to become a far more professional organisation. In turn, it will be capable of enhancing its growing portfolio of services and initiatives.

Cleanlink, which was held 5th and 6th April at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, contained a high content of technical expertise proffered by international executives; business sessions delivered by local management consultants; and social happenings.

The contribution that Jena Dyco's Jenny Boymal made on both the marketing and organisational fronts cannot be under-estimated. Her sterling efforts to ensure Cleanlink's success were applauded by all.

Jena Dyco Rug Cleaning - MASSIVE success

April 2011

26 professionals booked in to learn from the best rug cleaning trainers in the world - Ruth Travis and Jeff Bishop. From the minute the course started, the room was buzzing with excitement.

The 4 day course was filled with learning about rugs, their origins, rug fibres and the different methods of rug cleaning. Much of the time was spent in the rug facility which was set up for the purpose of the course.

Take a look at the course photos to see the extent the trainers went to, to ensure the participants walked away with the skills and knowledge to run their own rug cleaning facility.

A definite highlight of the course was the Dusty Roberts attending and sharing some brilliant rug cleaning marketing advice.

The networking was sensational, the skills and knowledge gained were phenominal and the hands on experience blew everyone away. Over 30 rugs were cleaned throughout the time of the course, with many students being able to charge customers for rugs that were cleaned during the course.

The course will be running early 2012 - if you are interested in booking in please contact Jena Dyco on 03 9815 0175 or email Jena Dyco.

Jena Dyco launches Australia's first Clandestine Lab Testing & Analysis course

February 2011

Jena Dyco is proud to announce the launch of its newest course to its training series, the Clandestine Lab Testing and Analysis Course.

This latest course follows on from the success of the Remediation of Clandestine Lab Residues course, which was launched in July last year and teaches restorers how to clean up clandestine drug labs.

The Clandestine Lab Testing and Analysis course is geared towards occupational hygienists and advanced restoration technicians and will lead students through the entire process of clandestine lab testing from the point they are notified of the site to the sign-off and handover after validation retesting of the dwelling.

The first course will be held on 13th & 14th of April at Jena Dyco's custom built training facility in Melbourne.

Jena Dyco Director Jenny Boymal said this new course will develop on from Jena Dyco's Meth Lab Cleanup project.

"We've already established a course to teach restorers how to safely and correctly remediate properties, but currently in Australia there are very few occupational hygienists who are qualified to undertake forensic testing of these properties," said Ms Boymal.

"As pre- and post- testing are both critical steps in the remediation process, developing a clandestine lab testing and analysis course seemed like the next logical step."

The course will be instructed by Jena Dyco trainer and forensic guru Dr Nick Powell. Dr Powell is also the director of New Zealand based Forensic and Industrial Science, a company which has been involved in the testing of over 300 clandestine labs since 2004.

Ms Boymal also said that the new Clandestine Lab Testing and Analysis course was an important next step in developing an industry around clandestine lab remediation.

"As far as public and environmental health are concerned, this is a really important area to develop," said Ms Boymal.

"In 2008-2009 449 clandestine drug labs were detected in Australia - this is a problem that isn't going away and a remediation industry needs to be established around it to help support the problem.

"Clandestine drug labs are highly volatile environments that are full of dangerous chemical concoctions. In the interests of public and environmental health, developing training in the area of clan lab remediation and testing is critical to ensure that the cleanup jobs are completed correctly."

Jena Dyco is also in the process of organising their annual Meth Lab Cleanup Conference, which will be held on Friday 29th July at Sea World on the Gold Coast. For more information please visit www.meth2011.com.au.

The first Clandestine Lab Testing and Analysis course will be held on 13th & 14th April 2011 at Jena Dyco's custom built training facility in Melbourne. For more information about enrolment or prerequisite requirements, please contact the Jena Dyco office on 03 9815 0175 or research@jenadyco.com.

2010 - A Reflection

January 2011

Jena Dyco is a business that speaks to other small businesses day in and day out. We get very different reports on how people feel their business performed in 2010. Some companies believe that the impact of the Global Financial Crisis hit and people started to watch their spendings, others believe that the impact of the interest rate rises in Australia had something to do with their lower 2010 figures.

I understand that all of the above factors do impact on businesses. When people are more conscious of their spendings, you have to work harder to make the same money. Does that mean that dropping your prices is the way to go? I personally don’t believe it is. I think it is useful at a time like this to reflect on what you do in your business and see how you can improve your practices to be more competitive in the market place.

Read some basic tips which can make a huge difference to a carpet cleaning business.

ICA encourages professional remediation of flood damaged property in Victoria

October 2010

The Insurance Council of Australia is recommending that those affected by the recent floods in regional Victoria see to the remediation of water damaged carpets and soft furnishings.

Recent flooding in Victoria's North-East has caused damage to thousands of homes, with the damage bill estimated to run into the tens of millions of dollars. According to the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA), insurers have already received in excess of 5,000 claims for flood damage to private homes in the amount of $20million. These numbers are expected to rise as the possibility of further flooding remains high.

The State Emergency Service (SES) remains on alert and minor flood warnings continue to be in place for all rivers across the Goulburn Murray region.

The State Government has made grants of $1,000 available to residents in need of financial assistance, who had to evacuate their homes in flood-affected regions. Larger grants of $26,000 are available for residents whose properties have sustained structural damage as a result of flooding.

For property owners, it is important to ensure water damaged carpets and soft furnishings are removed or remediated promptly after flooding. Water damaged carpets carry associated health and hygiene risks to residents. The ICA recommends that removal and remediation of water damaged carpets and soft furnishings be done in consultation with the owners' insurer.

Survey finds workers at risk of developing respiratory disease

August 2010

A nationwide survey by Safe Work Australia has found almost four out of 10 workers are exposed to airbourne hazards in the workplace.

The National Hazard Exposure Worker Surveillance study surveyed 4500 Australian workers to determine the extent of workers' exposure to selected occupational disease-causing hazards. The survey, the first of its kind to investigate exposure to workplace hazards in Australia, also examined the controls provided in workplaces to eliminate or reduce these hazards.

Any restorers who complete mould remediation or clandestine drug lab decontamination jobs should be particularly aware of the hazards involved and should always wear appropriate respiratory equipment.

Airborne hazards in the workplace, such as dusts, gases, vapours, smoke and fumes, can cause or exacerbate serious respiratory diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asbestosis, and cancers of the respiratory system, such as mesothelioma and lung cancer.

Workers were asked how long they were exposed for and what types of dusts, gases, vapours, smoke or fumes they were exposed to. Workers were also asked to indicate whether or not particular types of airborne hazard controls (masks, respirators, ventilation systems or reducing exposure time) were provided in their workplaces.

The results of the study, released in July 2010, found:

- 39 per cent of Australian workers were exposed to airborne hazards in the workplace;

- Young workers were more likely to be exposed to airborne hazards than older workers, reported longer durations of exposure and had the highest representation in six of the 11 airborne hazard types;

- Industries with the highest likelihoods of exposure to airborne hazards were manufacturing, transport and storage, construction and agriculture, forestry and fishing;

- Occupations with the highest likelihoods of exposure to airborne hazards were technician and trade workers, machinery operators and drivers, and labourers;

- 23 per cent of workers who reported they were exposed to airborne hazards were not provided with any airborne hazard controls; 22 per cent were provided with one control, and 55 per cent were provided with more than one airborne hazard control; and

- Industries least likely to provide more than one airborne hazard control were transport and storage, agriculture, forestry and fishing, and education.

Safe Work Australia says the survey findings will enable safety agencies to focus campaigns and policy initiatives on industries and occupations with the greatest odds of exposure to airborne hazards, and those where workers reported exposure to airborne hazards with most serious health consequences.

Changes to accident compensation

August 2010

Workers and employees must comply with a raft of reforms to the Accident Compensation Act 1985, passed by the Victorian Parliament in March this year.

The changes came into effect from July 1, and follow the first round of reforms in April this year.

The most recent changes relate specifically to discrimination, return to work, lodgement of claims, employer premiums and self insurance.

The new laws enhance protection against discrimination for workers making or pursuing compensation claims, increase penalties for discrimination, allow a review of WorkSafe's decision not to prosecute discrimination, and enable a worker to bring their own action in the Magistrates' Court to address discrimination.

The July 1 changes require employers to meet five core return to work obligations, including:

- Providing pre-injury or suitable employment;

- Planning a worker's return to work;

- Consulting about a worker's return to work;

- Appointing a Return to Work Co-ordinator; and

- Making specific return to work information available.

A transitional period will be implemented between now and March 31 next year to enable employers with existing claims to adjust to the return to work changes.

An electronic lodgement facility will also be available to employers, enabling them to lodge their workers' claims for compensation directly to their agents via the internet.

The key changes regarding premiums relate to the definitions of payroll used in calculating an employer's premium. The new definitions have been more closely aligned with the Victorian payroll tax system and the WorkCover Authority of New South Wales. Employers can visit the Online Employer Services System to check whether the changes impact on their payroll and need declared to WorkSafe.

Under the new laws, employers can now request a review of an estimated claim cost where they consider it has been calculated based on incorrect data, and an independent expert body will review premiums every five years. New penalties also now apply to encourage premium compliance.

WorkSafe now has the power to renew the approval of self-insurers for subsequent terms of six years, where they have driven improvements in safety, injury management and return to work.

A self-insurer must now also document its claims management policies and provide them to their workers and WorkSafe.

IICRC chairman awarded international gong

August 2010

Institution of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) chairman Paul Pearce has been selected to serve on the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) 2010-2011 International Section Council. His one-year term begins on August 21, 2010.

Pearce is an IICRC master cleaner, restorer and instructor as well as the owner of Country House Carpet Care in the United Kingdom. He started his career in 1973 and has written numerous articles, spoken internationally and cleaned for many well known and respected clients. Pearce is a past president of the National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCAA) and is the organisation's current technical director. He is also a past chairman of the British Cleaning Council.

The ASAE serves the international association community, representing more than 22,000 association professional, industry partners, and consultant members from nearly 11,000 organizations. Its members manage leading trade associations, individual membership societies, and voluntary organisations across the US and 50 countries around the globe. ASAE also represents suppliers of products and services to the association community.

Pearce plans to draw on his experience from working with the IICRC to discuss emerging issues and opportunities for associations who wish to work effectively overseas.

Jena Dyco International is an IICRC-approved training provider.

IICRC president Patrick Winters said Pearce's international perspective had been a crucial factor in elevating the IICRC to a global level.

"I have no doubt that his participation on this committee will benefit ASAE, and the IICRC will benefit from the insights of other ASAE committee members," Mr Winters said.

ASAE International Program Director Megan Freedman said:

"Members of ASAE's International Section Council bring their own expertise as well as the experience of their organisations to the table to discuss emerging issues and opportunities for associations who wish to work effectively overseas. We are honored to include Paul and to draw from his perspective and experience with IICRC as we continue to build resources and community for association international practitioners."

As a member of the International Section Council, Pearce will serve on one or more committees for a one-year term and may be re-appointed for up to a total of three years of service.

WorkSafe warnings should be taken seriously

July 2010

WorkSafe has advised companies to take all warnings and prohibition notices seriously, after a Melbourne company was convicted and fined $96,500 for continuing to expose workers to obvious safety risks, despite two prohibition notices issued requiring work to stop immediately because of immediate danger to workers.

The Sunshine Magistrates' Court found that that the construction company failed to comply with five legal notices issued by WorkSafe at their Port Melbourne construction site in 2008.

Despite WorkSafe's warnings and advice, none of the notices were complied with. When inspectors later visited a second construction site operated by the company in Elwood, they identified similar breaches - resulting in more notices being issued.

As a result, the company was convicted and fined $96,500. The director of the company pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined $17,000.

WorkSafe's Acting Executive Director for Health and Safety Stan Krpan said that companies should never wait for a second warning from WorkSafe, because you are exposing your workers to risk in the meantime.

"This is a situation where a director had every opportunity to meet WorkSafe's recommendations - the inspector explained the content, and the need for a follow-up visit," said Mr Krpan.

"Of even more concern is that similar breaches were later identified on a second work site operated by the same company - when the director clearly knew workers were at risk," he said.

CleanScene coming to Melbourne in 2011

July 2010

CleanScene: The National Cleaning & Hygiene Expo is coming to Melbourne in April 2011.

The next event will run between 5 - 7 April 2011, at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre alongside Safety In Action, Australasia's premier workplace health and safety trade show.

The inaugural CleanScene Expo in Sydney in 2009 surpassed all expectations within the commercial and industrial cleaning sectors. It attracted almost 5,000 visitors either directly or through the co-located Safety and Materials Handling show.

"The co-location in particular worked exceptionally well," explained Managing Director of organisers Australian Exhibitions & Conferences (AEC) Marie Kinsella.

"In some industries the OHS person is also responsible for cleaning, making next year's CleanScene and Safety In Action a must-attend event for some OHS representatives, as well for those directly responsible for cleaning and maintenance."

The CleanScene show will be held between 5 - 7 April 2011 at Melbourne Exhibition Centre, alongside Safety In Action, for more information visit the Clean Scene Website.

Prosecution highlights safety language barrier

July 2010

WorkSafe has advised companies that they should make sure that workers with limited English are properly trained and able to do their jobs safely.

These comments come after a Murrayville-based potato farm was convicted and fined $40,000 for failing to ensure a worker with limited English received clear instruction and training before operating a telehandler.

"All employees, including those whose first language is not English, need information and training to understand the risks involved in their work and enable them to do their job safely," WorkSafe Victoria's Acting Executive Director for Health and Safety Stan Krpan said.

"If a worker has limited English, employers may need to make an extra effort to ensure the worker is clear on the risks. This may simply involve taking a little extra time or involving a translator - which may be another worker," Mr Krpan said.

The incident occurred in 2008 when an employee at the farm, an Indian national on a study visa, lost control of a telehandler and hit a truck driver. The truck driver sustained a number of injuries and was required to stay in hospital for a week.

The Mildura Magistrates' Court heard that the worker was moving the unloaded telehandler to a different farm site after watching a five minute demonstration on how to operate it. The worker had never previously operated a telehandler and the demonstration was provided by another employee who had no formal qualifications or training to operate a telehandler, or instruct others how to use it.

"This is someone with limited English, who been with the company for two weeks, and had never operated a telehandler before," Mr Krpan said.

"This is a reminder for employers about their legal duties to ensure workers are provided with information, instruction, training or supervision which enables them to perform their work in a way that is safe and without risks to health," he said.

Understanding the Risks Associated with Clan Labs

June 2010

Jena Dyco will be holding their inaugural Meth Lab Cleanup Conference, Understanding the Risks Associated with Clan Labs, in Melbourne on Friday, 9th of July.

The 1-day event will raise awareness of the problems and health issues that clandestine drug labs pose to the wider community and will present a comprehensive view to the problem. Speakers will be presenting on issues such as duty of care, the risks of methamphetamine residues, police procedures, occupational health and safety, and insurance issues.

Clandestine methamphetamine laboratories, or 'clan labs' are highly volatile and pose serious health issues to the greater community. Benzene, ammonia, methylene chloride and phosphine are just some of the chemicals which are used in the manufacture of methamphetamine and can result in dizziness, headaches and reactions, chemical burns, lung damage, and nerve damage. Clan labs are almost always set up in rental properties, meaning that future tenants are at greatest risk.

This conference will bring together speakers and delegates from a wide range of industries involved in the remediation process, including local councils, government departments, property investors, insurance assessors, occupational hygienists, restorers and academics. Post-conference drinks will provide delegates the opportunity to network in a social environment, enabling them to establish contacts for future use.

The conference is an absolute must for any restorers looking to get into the drug lab or crime scene cleanup sectors. Please visit the Meth Lab Website for more information about speakers and the conference.

ED Oates to buy Research Products

May 2010

In what is seemingly a good fit, ED Oates, a subsidiary of public company GUD Holdings, has reached an agreement to buy the Wedina Holdings' family of brands being Research Products, Citrus Resources and Dry Fusion.

"Over the past few months the due diligence process has been underway with the support of the GUD board and management. Final purchase and signed agreements are being confirmed this week," stated ED Oates' chief executive officer David Birch.

"The management team here at Oates is delighted with the opportunity this presents to our business and of course to our national team. We are also delighted that throughout this process the shared business philosophies and vision for this business between Oates, GUD, and Research Products' owner Elizabeth Goldsmith provided the strong basis for this agreement and purchase," he added.

Birch assured all customers that ED Oates will "maintain a 'business as usual' approach while we engage them in continuing the strong and valued partnerships that exist. And thereafter to ensure the national structure and professional teams here at Oates work with all customers in growing this business."

Storms across Australia a costly expense for Insurers

April, 2010

The recent spate of wild weather across Australia has come at a cost to a number of Australia's largest insurance providers.

A lack of storms, cyclones or floods means less costly claims and healthier profits for insurers. However damage caused by the recent hail storms in Melbourne and Perth as well as floods in south-east Queensland are costing the big insurers major payouts. The total cost of the damage in Melbourne alone is expected to be well in excess of $400 million across the insurance industry.

A massive storm that hit Sydney and the Newcastle region during the Queen's birthday weekend three years ago rated as one of the most costly events on record for insurers, prompting payouts of about $1.5 billion. More recently the insurance bill for last year's Victorian bushfire ran to $1.1 billion.

Jena Dyco Mould Conference a smash success

March 2010

The Jena Dyco International Mould Conference held in Melbourne on Saturday 20th March has been hailed a smash success.

The conference brought together professionals from the restoration, carpet cleaning, building and mould remediation sectors and provided the seventy attendees to network, share ideas and listen to lectures from Australian experts.

Dr Heike Neumeister-Kemp from Mycologia was the key-note speaker on the day and spoke for thirty minutes about the history of mould remediation, differing global trends in remediation and how the industry can collaborate to share knowledge and tackle the problem of mould more effectively.

Other speakers included president of the National Upholstery, Carpet Cleaners and Restorers Association (NUCCRA) Gary Burke, who spoke about the benefits of a united industry, Loss Adjuster Graham Peters from Crawford and Company, who spoke about insurance perspectives on mould, Jena Dyco International Instructor Charlie Lodge, who spoke about the OH&S requirements and considerations of mould remediation, and Vince Neil from Mycotox, who launched Mycotox's latest findings regarding the mycotoxins found in mould.

The panel discussion that concluded the conference provided the members of the audience a chance to ask the experts questions about their presentations as well as on-the-job problems they may have come across.

The conference also included a mini exhibition, showcasing Carpet Cleaners Warehouse, Mycologia, NUCCRA, Absolute Safety and Sundstrom.

Lunch and drinks served after the conference allowed attendees to network in a social environment. A relaxed atmosphere buzzing with knowledge and ideas being shared by the attendees was enough proof for Jena Dyco Director Jenny Boymal to deem the conference a success.

"I'm so glad that Jena Dyco was able to host an event that provided professionals in a number of industries the opportunity to come together, network and share knowledge," she said.

A DVD of the Mould Conference will be available for purchase next week. If you attended the conference and have any feedback on the conference, Please contact Jena Dyco or call 03 9815 0175.

PPP pays off for students

February 2010

Nearly three quarters of job seekers trained under the Productivity Places Program (PPP) have gained employment or have continued with their studies.

The Outcomes from the Productivity Places Program report issued by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) shows that of the 23,000 job seekers trained under the PPP in 2008, including some highly disadvantaged jobseekers, 47 per cent have moved into employment after completing their training, while a further 26 per cent have continued their training.

The profile of PPP graduates supports the Government’s social inclusion agenda. More than 20 per cent have a disability and more than 34 per cent speak a language other than English at home.

Jena Dyco ran training for Certificate II and III in Asset Maintenance (Carpet Cleaning) funded by the Productivity Places Program between August 2008 and May 2009.

Mouldy buildings cause problems down the track

February 2010

Two separate mould-related incidents which occurred recently in the US emphasise the importance of offering mould remediation services.

A 39 year old fire fighter in Orlando, Florida, US has been awarded a $US 54,000 annual disability retirement following the discovery that poor air quality at the fire station where she worked was responsible for her debilitating respiratory problems, report local sources.

The poor air quality of Fire Station 9 in Orlando has been attributed to problems with mould and water intrusion, with health complaints from staff recorded as far back as 2000.

An inspection conducted by Certified Mold Consultants in May 2009 found fungal growth in the station's air conditioning system and ducts, as well as mould under the building, in crawl spaces and an office wall. The inspection also discovered one type of mould that can cause skin lesions, sinus and pulmonary infections.

Meanwhile, the discovery of $US 892, 500 worth of mould damage has deferred the bid opening for prospective operators of a resort and conference centre in Springfield, Illinois, US.

Local sources report that the $US 24, 236 mould study has caused the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to defer the bid opening for the Eagle Creek Resort and Conference Centre at Lake Shelbyville to 5 February, 2010.

Jena Dyco is bringing out IICRC mould remediation trainer Peter Sierck from the US for an Applied Microbial Remediation Course to be held on the 16 - 19 March in Melbourne. They are also holding a Mould Conference on the 20th of March. To enrol or find out more information about the course or conference, please contact Jena Dyco.

Cleaners worth more than bankers

February 2010

Recent studies have found that hospital cleaners have been placed above city bankers in terms of their worth to society.

The United Kingdom's New Economics Foundation (NEF) report looks at the consequences of economic activities and reveals that City workers, advertising executives and tax advisers destroy financial wealth, while hospital cleaners, childcare worker and staff in the waste recycling industry all create a positive return to the British economy.

For example, advertising executives cost society by perpetuating over-consumption and creating socially and environmentally wasteful wants, while hospital cleaners alleviate the human and financial cost of hospital acquired infections and make a significant contribution to the wider social value created by healthcare.

The report found that hospital cleaners create more than $A20 in value for every $2 they receive in pay. In contrast, City bankers destroy $A14 of value for every $A2 they create.

Chief Executive of the Cleaning and Support Services Association in the UK Andrew Large said "It is widely accepted that the cleaning industry is a key factor in protecting patients from hospital acquired infections, but these findings demonstrate the additional economic value our industry creates."

The process will involve consulting with a special committee on a bi-annual basis. The committee will consist of industry volunteers.

Chairperson of the R800 Reference Guide Committee Bill Doan said "As with each new standard or reference guide the IICRC drafts, we're looking for professionals who are dedicated to moving this forward."
